Samantha is a relatively modern name that first appeared in England in 1633. It’s a variant of the masculine name Samuel, which originated in Ancient Hebrew. Samuel was even mentioned in the Old Testament as a ruling judge who anointed Saul to become the king of Israel. Samuel became increasingly popular as a masculine given name during the Protestant Reformation movement in 16th century Europe.

The consensus among etymologists is that Samantha is a feminine variant of the masculine name Samuel. Around the turn of the 17th century, the name Samuel was converted to the feminine form of Samantha in Europe. Over time, the name was carried to North America where it’s since become one of the top given names for girls.

Although it first appeared in the 17th century, the name Samantha didn’t become popular until the latter half of the 18th century when the famous American author Marietta Holley published a series of novels about a woman named Samantha. Holley published nearly a dozen novels about Samantha. These novels introduced thousands of readers to the name Samantha for the first time.

In 1880, birth records show that Samantha was the 365th most popular girls’ name in the United States. By 1920, its popularity had declined, with Samantha being the 1,661st most popular girls’ name in the country. In the 1950s, however, the name began trending in the opposite direction. In 1958, Samantha was the 998th most popular girls’ name in the United States. In 1966, it was the 182nd most popular girls’ name. Samantha peaked in 1993 through 1995 when it was the 4th most popular girls’ name.

As Samantha rose the charts to become of the most popular girls’ names in the United States, it was given to dozens of famous of women who further popularized the name, some of whom include American model Samantha Holvey, Canadian actress Samantha Bee, American actress Samantha Morton and American Olympic swimmer Samantha, Arsenault
