Meaning of the Name EveMeaning of the Name Eve

Eve is a biblical name with origins dating back to the Old Testament. During my etymological studies, I’ve learned the meaning of the name Eve and what it represents.

Meaning of the name Eve: Derived from the Hebrew name Chawwah, the meaning of the name Eve is “living” or “to live.” It was first used in the Book Genesis to describe the first woman, Eve.

Origins of the Name Eve

The name Eve originated in the Old Testament Book of Genesis when it was used to describe the first woman created by God. According to the Book of Genesis, God created Eve by taking one of Adam’s ribs. She later discovers an apple from the tree of knowledge, which she shares with Adam. Unbeknownst to Eve and Adam, though, this wasn’t an ordinary apple. It was the forbidden fruit, resulting in the couple’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

Although the name Eve was used in the Book of Genesis, it didn’t become a common given name until the 12th century. In the early 1100s England, more and more families began naming their daughters Eve to represent their strong beliefs in Christianity or Judaism.

The name Eve grew even more popularity in England and surrounding European countries during the 1500s. Around this time, the Reformation began, resulting in the spread of Christianity throughout Europe. As more people converted to Christianity, Eve became a more popular feminine name. And once European explorers discovered the American continent, they brought the name Eve with them.
